American football uniforms are the most technically demanding category in teamwear manufacturing. Between impact padding, 4-way stretch construction, and the sheer physical abuse they take, gridiron jerseys demand a different level of engineering than any other sport.
Fabric Specification
Standard game jerseys use 180-220 GSM polyester spandex blend with 4-way stretch — meaning the fabric stretches both lengthwise and widthwise. This lets the jersey move with the player during tackles and rotations without binding or tearing at stress points.
- Body: 88% polyester / 12% spandex, 180 GSM
- Shoulder panel: reinforced mesh, 220 GSM
- Sleeve cuff: 2x2 rib knit for grip retention
- Numbers: tackle-twill stitched (not sublimated) for durability
Shoulder Pad Integration
Football jerseys are cut to fit over shoulder pads — the armhole sits lower, the chest is wider, and the shoulder seam is dropped. This is not a standard jersey pattern. Factories without football-specific patterns produce jerseys that bind across the chest when the player wears pads.
Impact Padding Options
Modern football uniforms offer integrated padding options — EVA foam inserts at the ribs, hips, and shoulders that absorb impact without the bulk of separate pads. The foam density and thickness directly affect protection level.
- EVA foam density: 45-90 kg/m³ depending on position
- Padding thickness: 6-12 mm typical for game jerseys
- CE EN 1621 impact testing available on request
- Padding is removable for washing and replacement
Tackle-Twill vs Sublimation Numbers
Unlike soccer or basketball jerseys, football jerseys almost always use tackle-twill stitched numbers instead of sublimated ones. The stitched numbers resist the friction and pulling forces that happen during tackles. Only practice jerseys use sublimation.
Fit and Size Curve
Football size curves differ significantly from other sports. Linemen may wear 3XL, while kickers wear S. Our production line supports full size curves from Youth S to Adult 5XL with custom chest, waist, and sleeve-length measurements if needed.
“Every football order we run includes a fit sample for each size range — because a jersey that fits a quarterback won't fit a lineman, even at the same labeled size.”
