MOQ — Minimum Order Quantity — is the one word that stops most new sports brands from launching. But MOQ isn't arbitrary. Understanding why it exists helps you negotiate a realistic first order.
Why Factories Have MOQs
Every new design requires setup — digitizing patterns, cutting fabric rolls, calibrating sublimation profiles, and testing samples. For a 30-piece order, that setup cost gets amortized across 30 units. For a 300-piece order, it spreads across 300. Below a threshold, the per-unit cost becomes impossible to sustain.
Typical MOQs by Product Type
- Custom jerseys (soccer, basketball, baseball) — 30-50 pieces per design
- American football jerseys with padding — 40-50 sets
- Ice hockey sweaters — 30-40 pieces
- Track & field singlets — 50 pieces
- Match-grade thermo-bonded soccer balls — 100 pieces
- Training/practice balls — 50 pieces
- Leather fielding gloves — 30 pieces
How to Lower Effective MOQ
You can't often lower the MOQ per design, but you can lower the effective minimum by spreading across multiple designs. For example, instead of one 50-piece order for one design, order 50 pieces total split across 2-3 colorways. Same MOQ, more variety to test the market.
Sample Runs Explained
Before any bulk order, factories offer sample runs of 1-3 pieces. Sample cost is typically $60-150 per unit depending on complexity. This lets you validate fit, fabric, and print quality before committing to bulk MOQ. Most factories (including ours) refund sample cost against bulk order confirmation.
Realistic First Order Budget
For a first order of 50 custom jerseys at typical B2B pricing ($18-25 per unit) plus setup and shipping, budget approximately $1,200-1,800 total. This includes your design setup, sample, bulk production, and DDP shipping to your door.
“The biggest mistake new brands make is trying to launch with 5 products at 20 pieces each. Better: launch with 1-2 products at full MOQ, learn from real customers, then scale.”
